Default Requirements: what exactly do they mean

I'm pretty new (N/E9) and I have a Bone Staff +10 energy 6-10 cold damage (req 5 death magic) or whatever it is. Anyways, it lets me use it and it appears to give me the extra energy, but I dont have any points invested into the req. So what exactly is the downfall in using something that you dont meet it's reqs.

If you don't meet the reqs, to my knowledge your stuff won't cause the damage it's supposed to (or give you the AR it's supposed to, for shields).

Not so important if you're equipping a staff for a high +Energy, important if you want to effectively wield that shiny max damage sword you just bought.

yeah I've done a few tests, and an 8-12 Sword that I've met the reqs for on an alt was noticably more damaging then the 15-22 I put in his hand afterwords.

If the energy +10 had a (req. x whatever) then you would not get that energy. But if the damage on the weapon was the only part with a requisit than you would get the energy but you would take a severe hit to the damage.

Some weapons have multiple reqs. for different mods. Like a bow with a marksmenship req. on the damage, and an armor +5 that requires expertise.
